Mozilla Firefox Metro UI Development Begins

Mozilla have this week announced that they have now started development on the new Firefox User Interface for Windows 8. Following on from the launch of the Microsoft’s Windows 8 Consumer Preview last month.
Mozilla is currently re-designing their popular browser to fit within the new Metro style Windows 8 user interface. Which Mozilla say will improve the user and web experience for Windows 8 users.
Mozilla Firefox Metro
Brian Bondy from Mozilla explains that a browser can only participate in Metro mode if it is the default browser. So if Firefox is not setup as the default browser on a system, unfortunately you will not be able to use it in Metro mode. The decision for this has been made by Microsoft. Bondy continues by saying:
“Our first major goal is to get an experimental build of Fennec or Firefox running in Metro. This work is mainly being tracked in Bug 732518.
We have several smaller goals that we want to tackle next week:
-Figure out how to make our own PRI files with our own resources.
-Get a C++/XAML application working
-Get our app launching through a delegate DLL instead of an EXE
-Figure out how to interop XAML / DirectX.
-Start to figure out how we will paint content to our DirectX surface with the graphics layer
-Figure out how to implement other contracts
-Look into native theme rendering”
Its still early days for the Mozilla Firefox Metro development team, but as more information becomes available we will keep you updated.

Samsung Is The Sole Supplier Of New iPad 3 Retina Display

Apple’s new iPad 3 goes on sale this Friday, and it would appear that Samsung is the sole supplier of the new Retina display for the iPad 3, which is interesting considering the various legal cases between the two companies.
According to a recent report both LG and Sharp were also expected to be supplying the Retina display for the new iPad 3, although it would appear that both of them had problems meeting Apple’s quality standards.

Apple obviously has been attempting to get both Sharp and LG to produce the displays for them, as we suspect they are less than happy about continuing to use Samsung because of the legal battles between the two companies.
Samsung also produces Apple’s A5x processor which will power the new iPad 3, so Apple doesn’t really have a choice but to use them for the processor and the displays for the new iPad 3 despite their legal differences.

Apple’s Tablet Share Drops After Kindle Fire Launch

According to a recent report by research firm IDC, Apple’s share of the tablet market fell to 54.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011, which is down from the previous quarter where Apple’s share of the tablet market was at 61.5 percent.
The report also mentions some information about Android’s share of the tablet market, which has increased due to the release of the new Amazon Kindle Fire tablet which took a 16.8 percent share of the tablet market in the same quarter.

“Amazon’s widely-reported entry into the media tablet market with a $199, 7-inch product seemed to raise consumers’ awareness of the category worldwide despite the fact that the Fire shipped almost exclusively in the U.S. in the fourth quarter,” said Tom Mainelli, research director, Mobile Connected Devices. “As a result, products across the pricing spectrum sold well, including everything from Apple’s premium-priced iPads (which start at $499) to Pandigital’s line of Android-based, entry-level tablets (which start at $120). The success of market leader Apple was particularly noteworthy, as the company’s shipment total for the quarter represents an increase of 110.5% from 4Q10.”
Android’s share of the tablet market rose to 44.6 percent in quarter four of 2011, this was up from 32.3 percent in quarter three of 2011.
